For a club which claims origins in the 1890s, the honours list
is rather short, or memorable - it all depends on how you look
at it. But from now on it goes like this: 2008 -
Winners, Surrey Cricket League Division 3. A pedant
might quibble that Division 3 is actually the fourth tier.
But we have no truck with pedantry at Wimbledon Village, except
when perfectly good runs are given as leg byes - God, that annoys
us.
Anyway don't interrupt, we were talking about the 2008
campaign. Yes indeed, here in its full cyber-glory you can
re-live the Village victorious 2008 league campaign: the runs, the
wickets, the chat, the walking in, the egg sandwiches.
Big performances that won the
league
17 May v John
Fisher - Our first big test of the season, and the
Village shook off a slow start to the season with a crucial second
victory. As would be the case for much of the season, a big
partnership between Mike Moran and Tim Kernutt
made the difference. Mike notched his first ton of the season
- and carried his bat for the first time in his career. Mike
went on to make 2 centuries and 6 half-centuries - his most
productive season with the bat for years.
31 May v Cheam
- Another enormous partnership between Mike Moran and
Tim Kernutt, with Tim the one registering a ton
this time. His 109, his first of the season, came off 64
balls and included one enormous hit that cleared the trees on the
Cambridge Road perimeter of Cottenham Park. As with Mike,
Tim's big knocks were too numerous to cite here individually: 3
centuries and 3 half-centuries two of which got into the 90s.
14 Jun v
Banstead - A crucial victory over another of the
leading sides by a 10 man Village. Chasing a very achievable
183, Banstead were all out 19 runs short due to a superb
performance by our bowlers. Mike Moran and Neil Chilvers got
crucial wickets but Andy Downs starred with a
magic 5 for 27, his first five-fer for the Village and even
more important for the team.
5 July v
Battersea Ironsides - With a 10 over limit in our
format of cricket, you don't see five-fers very often. But we saw a
second one this season when Stu Chamberlain's
excellent 5 for 36, including a fantastic caught and bowled, saw
off the Ironsides at Cottenham Park in July.
12 July v
Osterley - Osterley were an early front runner, but
they faded mid-season. The Village's victory at theirs sent
us top, from where we never looked back. Mike Moran and
Luke Morgan got the runs, and Luke's quickfire 52
off 50 balls made him only the third Village batsman of the season
to buy a jug.
16 August v
Woodside Green - The Village bowled Woodside Green out
for a paltry 99 then wobbled badly. Stu
Chamberlain rescued us, blasting 56no to complete what
should have been a routine victory and in the process becoming only
the fourth batsman to go past 50.
